Overview

On the cover of his 1994 American Recordings CD, country music legend and American icon Johnny Cash stands between two black and white dogs. One is named Sin, and the other Redemption. This photo is a distillation of the themes of Cash’s life—themes that have resonated with people well beyond the borders of country music.

Walk the Line is the story of Cash’s love for June Carter. The film chronicles his painful childhood which, in turn, infects his adult life. Fame and wealth only cause the issues of self-doubt and disconnection to fester, leading to adultery, divorce, and drug addiction. In the end, Cash’s relief and redemption come through the patient, tough love of Carter, and, only subtly hinted at, the grace of God. This study guide will help you discuss the themes raised in Walk the Line. It could be argued that there is only one theme in the film—love—that begets redemption, newfound identity, and freedom.
