Overview

Steven Spielberg’s follow-up to Schindler’s List is a sometimes harrowing, ultimately uplifting account of an uprising of African prisoners on a Cuban slave ship, and the dramatic trial which not only determined their fate but affected the plight of slaves throughout America in the years leading up to the Civil War.

This study guide draws out the film’s many spiritually significant themes. Amistad celebrates the strength that can be found in weakness and reminds us to look for value in people we might otherwise discount. It shows us characters who undergo spiritual transformation, celebrates the wisdom that can be learned from the past, and raises questions about the true nature of slavery and freedom.
