In Clint Eastwood’s film, the viewer is introduced to a trio of characters who have all, in some way, been touched by death—and by the nagging suspicion that there’s something waiting for us beyond this earthly life. As the three stories of dying and the “hereafter” gradually converge, the film invokes miracles, the supernatural, psychic mediums—even the name of Jesus.
But is there any comfort to be found in Hereafter’s imagining of the next world, or is it only so much philosophical mumbo jumbo? It is, if nothing else, a movie with its heart in the right place; its scenes of grief are touched by empathy and compassion, and its search for answers seems sincere. This discussion guide focuses on the philosophical questions raised by the film—and their practical ramifications—by comparing them to what the Bible says about mortality and the hereafter—and the true source of our only hope and comfort, in life and in death.
