“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get,” states Forrest Gump. Yes, life is full of uncertainty and wonder, raising questions such as: Why did a film full of bumper-sticker sentiments earn more than $670 million worldwide and land the Oscar for Best Picture in 1994? Because of the childlike, yet rock-steady main character, of course. This fictional character is almost iconic in our culture. Gump, despite his disabilities, found himself in the center of the most turbulent events from the 1950s through the 1980s. His sense of hope and innocence, and the way he jumps into life without cynicism, are captivating in our chaotic world.
