Overview

The benediction at President George W. Bush's presidential inauguration was delivered by Kirbyjon Caldwell, an African American pastor from Houston known in Texas for his entrepreneurial ministries and his gospel of "good success." Now he is becoming known nationwide as a supporter of the faith-based initiative concept espoused by President Bush.

Caldwell seems to be part Joseph and part Jabez: a man raised to prominence among government leaders who unabashedly asks for material blessings. (Although in The Prayer of Jabez Bruce Wilkinson talks about spiritual blessings that may or may not involve material blessings, the biblical character Jabez did pray for the material blessing of territory.) In this study, we will consider the concept of "good success"-how God blesses the people he uses.
